As school finishes for the summer SUR scores top marks

In the month of July alone, over 28 members of staff from across the Slough Urban Renewal (SUR) supply chain participated in numerous schools based initiatives, reaching in excess of 800 pupils across Slough.

From hosting careers focused Q&A sessions to running speed networking events, providing taster days and offering work experience places, the developer has been reaching out to young people in Slough. Through these various initiatives, SUR is helping to support pupil’s early careers planning, while providing them with an opportunity to get a real insight into the varied and exciting opportunities that a future career in construction can offer. Besides the various roles as skilled tradesmen there are also a multitude of professional occupations in the sector such as law, finance and accounting, project management, planning and architecture.

In July 2018, members of the SUR supply chain (including Morgan Sindall Construction and Borras Construction) supported a range of information, advice and guidance activity:

  • Welcome to the World of Work Q&A – graduates and apprentices from across the supply chain attended a series of Q&A sessions, where they answered questions put to them by Year 9 pupils from Windsor Girls School and Bayliss Court School.

  • Women in Industry Speed Networking – women from across the supply chain took part in a series of speed networking events where girls from local schools were invited to learn more about the various job roles and careers available to them within the construction industry.

  • Woodwork Taster Day – SUR sponsored a taster day at Wexham Secondary School, for 10, Year 9 pupils. The taster day was delivered by a tutor from the SATRO (an educational charity and social enterprise, which works with young people) mobile classroom, who is presently delivering a SUR sponsored BTEC Level 1 in Construction for Year 10 pupils at the school.

  • Work Experience – Morgan Sindall Construction provided two, week long work experience placements for two, Year 12 pupils. The pupils benefitted from exposure to all areas of the business, with 13 members of staff participating in the activity.

  • Managerial & Professional Careers Advice - SUR sponsored a day of careers advice, which was delivered to 156 Year 8 pupils at St Joseph’s Catholic High School. 

Ged Humphries, Community Benefits Employment & Skills Coordinator for SUR said: “A big focus for us at SUR is investing back into the local community and supporting the local events and initiatives that are taking place in Slough. We are closely linked to many of the local schools and we work with them on numerous initiatives from running one off training days or taster sessions to providing longer term commitment through sponsorship. July has been a fantastic month for us and it’s been great to get people from across the supply chain involved in meeting with and inspiring young people within the town.

“We’ve got lots of great things in the pipeline for when the academic year starts back in September. We look forward to reaching out to more young people, helping to support them on their academic journey and helping to educate them about the many opportunities available to them through a career in construction.”

SUR works alongside Slough Borough Council to deliver significant regeneration across the town of Slough. It is committed to supporting the wider community, delivering a series of programmes and initiatives that directly benefit local residents.
