Brentford residents enjoy a day of sporting activities and family fun

This Sunday, over 500 people from across Brentford and the wider borough enjoyed a day of sporting activity and family fun, as they took part in the fourth annual Brentford Challenge. The sporting event, invited people to compete in a timed paddleboarding trial on Brentford Lock, followed by a 5km and 1km run around the grounds of Syon Park.

Many families as well as groups of friends and local companies took part, with over 275 people participating in the sporting activities. All those who took part in the events were awarded with a Brentford Challenge participation medal. Those who completed the activities in the fastest times later took to the podium where they were presented with their trophies.

The Brentford Challenge was organised by Brentford FC Community Sports Trust and was supported by Brentford Lock West. Syon Park opened up the entire grounds of the estate for the 1k and 5k runs and sports activity day, whilst The Canal and River Trust provided access to the waterways of Brentford Lock. The Brentford Lock Holiday Inn also supplied power and amenities for the paddleboarding event.

To complement the sports events a free family sports activity day took place on the front lawns of Syon Park, offering a spectacular setting for the football tournament, 1k and 5k race finish line.

Many visitors opted to sit back and enjoy the sunshine whilst watching the runners complete the races or take part in one of the activities on offer – which included small-sided football on an inflatable pitch, rhythmic gymnastics, cheerleading, boxercise and short tennis.

One of the participants in the 5k run was newly elected MP for Brentford and Isleworth Ruth Cadbury who said “I would like to congratulate all of the staff and volunteers who have made this wonderful day possible taking place in the beautiful setting of Syon Park and Brentford Lock.”

Lee Doyle, Chief Executive, Brentford FC Community Sports Trust, said: “The Brentford Challenge demonstrates the core values of the Trust in action. It is deeply satisfying to see so many people of all ages and abilities taking part and clearly having a great time.

“We are proud to be able to stage this event in the heart of our community. Credit goes to the efforts of our staff and volunteers in planning the day and our event partners who have helped us create an event to look forward to. “

John Robinson, Development Director at Brentford Lock West, which sponsored the event added: “Sunday was great fun and it’s fantastic to see so many people making the most of the facilities the area has to offer. The Brentford Challenge provides an excellent opportunity for people to try their hand at a variety for sporting activities as well as enjoy the free, family fun day and we are proud to have been sponsoring this event for its fourth consecutive year.”

Situated along the banks of the Grand Union Canal, Brentford Lock West forms part of a five year project, which is expected to breathe new life into Brentford, through the delivery of 520 new homes. In addition to providing much needed new housing, the scheme will also deliver new community spaces and commercial buildings, helping to create new jobs for the area. The homes offer buyers a unique opportunity to secure a new, highly specified home, while benefiting from a host of community features and green initiatives – from roof top allotments to the delivery of a new watersports hub.
