When it opens in early 2021, Slough’s stylish new Moxy Hotel is set to inspire guests with the town’s longstanding connections to the famous Gerry & Sylvia Anderson show.
The 152-room hotel, which forms part of the broader transformation of the former library site, has secured a deal to incorporate subtle Thunderbirds-themed graphics within its décor, so guests can relive the pop culture of the 1960s through the eyes of the original International Rescue team.
The iconic series, which was originally filmed in the nearby Slough Trading Estate, will feature within the hotel’s design, celebrating the legacy of the popular puppet-based programme. From theming the floor level signage according to the numbered Thunderbirds vehicles to incorporating pop art wall graphics of Lady Penelope and iconic motifs from the beloved sci-fi series into its public areas, Moxy Slough will celebrate the local heritage with a fresh take on a British TV classic.
Andy Howell, General Manager, Slough Urban Renewal (SUR), said: “The Thunderbirds series is a treasured part of Slough’s history and we are really excited to see the new Moxy Slough Hotel bring this back to life through playful design references. The former library site is set to become a new destination in its own right and the Moxy hotel will form a great part of this.”
John Wagner, co-founder of Cycas Hospitality, who will be managing the double-decker hotel, explained: “From Crossrail to regeneration schemes, there’s no doubt that Slough’s ongoing transformation is putting the town on the map. We’re therefore delighted to be incorporating subtle nods to this iconic TV classic into the design of our upcoming Moxy Hotel and look forward to paying homage to one of Slough’s most-loved contributions to popular culture.”
Moxy Hotels, Marriott International’s millennial-focused brand, combine stylish design and approachable service at an affordable price point. Its buzzing lobbies are the hub of activity, with guests checking in at the bar, and the guest rooms are cosy yet functional, offering modern-day essentials such as furiously fast and free Wi-Fi and internet TV streaming capabilities. The new destination in Slough, located between the town centre and Slough station (served by Crossrail from late 2019), will offer 152 rooms and is set to open in 2021.
ITV Studios Global Entertainment has agreed a deal with Marriott International franchise partner Cycas Hospitality for the use of Thunderbirds graphics throughout their brand new Moxy Slough property.
The new hotel, which will be developed and owned by Slough Borough Council will be built via Slough Urban Renewal (SUR), a joint venture between Slough Borough Council and Morgan Sindall Investments Ltd, as part of a major redevelopment project to transform the former library site in the heart of Slough into hotel, retail and residential hub. The site enjoys a landmark position in the town centre. Planning consent was secured to deliver the Moxy Slough Hotel alongside a Residence Inn by Marriott Hotel, in addition to 64 apartments and 4,100 sq. ft of restaurant / retail space.
Works are due to commence on site spring 2019, with completion anticipated early 2021.
