Women in Construction Event at The Curve

The Women in Construction event held at The Curve on Wednesday 2nd November, welcomed girls from across Slough to participate in hands on activities and hear directly from a number of female ambassadors (including our very own Helen Todd) about the many career paths open to them within the construction industry.

The event was organised by Learning to Work on behalf of Slough Urban Renewal, supported by female ambassadors from across the Morgan Sindall Group and companies working in partnership with Slough Urban Renewal, including Stubbings Property Marketing.

More than 40 students took part in the workshops and met women already forging successful careers in the construction industry. Youngsters were also advised on the skills needed to succeed.

The construction industry employs over 3 million which account for 8 percent of the working population. With so much happening locally over the coming years,  the need to attract people with the right skills, passion and enthusiasm is vital.  In support of this it is important that we influence our workforce of tomorrow to consider all options open to them.  One of the best ways to ensure we maximise the impact is to bring industry experts and young people together.

Andy Howell, SUR General Manager, presented the development activity of SUR to the girls attending and said “The best way to demonstrate opportunities and deliver careers advice is to bring it alive.  This event was an excellent example of just how powerful meeting, talking and networking is to excite our talent pool of tomorrow.  Women in Construction was an ideal platform to break the many myths around stereotyping within the industry.”

Helen Todd of Stubbings Property Marketing commented: “It was a fantastic event and great to see so many young people inspired and enthused about a possible future career within the construction industry. It is so important that we focus on developing not only today’s talent but the talent of the future. It’s events like these, which put students in direct contact with people who are on the ground and already established within the industry, that can really bring career prospects to life. It was a privilege to be a part of the day and I look forward to more of these events in the future.”
